What is Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lane is Disney’s paid “skip the line” service that was previously called Genie+. This service is allows guests who pay for the service to select return times for attractions, and then go to a reduced wait time entrance. It can be purchased for as many days as you choose or none at all. You will notice some key differences in this shift.

In the shift from Genie+ to Lightning Lane

you will notice the two types of passes now named differently and changes that will let you sleep in and stay off your phone more while in the parks.

Multipass

Lightning Lane Multipass has replaced what was formerly known as Genie+. Multipass, as its name suggests, is a paid service to get multiple “skip the line” return times. Now when you purchase Multipass you are able to select 3 return times before you finalize payment. This is a great feature that give you the opportunity to make an informed decision on your purchase. Attractions will be grouped into Group 1 and 2. One selection can be from Group 1 and two from Group 2, or three from Group 2. These options can continue to be modified in the Disney Experience App as you see fit. Once you have selected your first Multipass day, you can continue to book Multipass for the days you wish for the rest of your trip.

Multipass is now an advanced purchased available to both resort and non-resort guests. Resort guests are able to book their Multipass and selections 7 days before the first day of their resort stay and for the length of your stay up to 10 days. Eligible resorts include all Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels and Shades of Green Resort. Note: if you have a resort stay at the time of booking your advanced selections and then cancel your resort reservation, the selections will also be cancelled. Disney World visitors that are not staying at an eligible Disney Resort can purchase and book their Multipass starting 3 days prior to their dated ticket or date of park reservation. This includes stand alone tickets, special events, dated ticket bundles, and Annual Passes. Out of country guests can book their Multipass within their booking window once they arrive in the US.

On the first day you use Multipass at the parks, you will be able to continue booking more selections for attraction return times. As soon as you check into your first selection you are able to book another selection. You would then continue to ride and book throughout the day based on availability. If you have a Park Hopping eligible ticket then you can continue to use Multipass after you ride your first selected return time.

We do still recommend to book high traffic rides first (not necessarily in return time but at the time of advanced selection) like Peter Pan or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, as they start booking quickly. Only so many return times exist in a day, so you will want to make sure to pick the priority ones early on.

Single Pass

Lightning Lane Single Pass has replaced what was formerly known as Individual Lightning Lane. Single Pass, as its name suggests, a paid service to get a single “skip the line” option. Each park has rides that are considered high demand. These rides will have Lightning Lane offered in only the Single Pass purchase. You can choose to purchase this in addition to Multipass, instead of Multipass, or not at all. Each park will have the Single Pass offered as long as they are available. These attractions tend to “sell out” early. (Advanced strategy on this new system isn’t available yet, but as soon as we figure it out we will share with you) Pricing is dynamic and changes with how busy the park is. We continue to recommend booking these rides ASAP as extra high demand attractions will sell out quickly.

Single Pass attractions

Magic Kingdom: Tron and Seven Dwarves Mine Train

Epcot: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Hollywood Studios: Rise of the Resistance

Animal Kingdom: Avatar Flight of Passage

There is lots to learn and see as this roll out comes underway. Over all we think the benefits will be great. Disney is giving us a Genie+ version that we asked for that is similar to the Fastpass of the past.

We think you will love booking with the new and improved Lightning Lane and getting to plan ahead for every day you want to book. This is going to give guests the opportunity to focus on their morning activities and not rush to book their plans for the day. With the 3 advance selections you can make sure you have time for dining reservations, breaks, or just know what to expect. No more cool down periods, as soon as you start checking in to your ride selection you can go ahead and book your next one. This more streamlined version is going to make visiting the parks easier and more magical than ever.
